Originating in Hawaii during the 19th century, the ukulele is no longer relegated only to luaus. It is enjoying widespread popularity in current popular music: Eddie Vedder released an entire album, “Ukulele Songs” album in 2011; and it’s heard on many hits from Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and classic rock hits from the Stones, the Beatles, and many more.

A highly portable instrument with only four strings, the ukulele is an instrument that anyone can enjoy playing. Jammin’ Music has had numerous ukulele students of all ages (see them in the photos at right), most of them learning to play and sing popular songs from the radio. The ukulele can also be a gateway instrument to the guitar for very young kids, as the small size and fewer strings of the ukulele (four vs. six) are gentler on little hands than the guitar.
